Recap of Neighborhood Social at Blue Crab
Thank you to everyone who came out for our kickoff to summer social! We had a great turnout. Thank you to Nick and Gail Asprodites for their hospitality at the Blue Crab. And a very big thank you to our newest board member, Wanda Paul, for organizing the evening. We hope to continue to host social events for the neighborhood and cannot do so without your support and paid membership.
Increased Rodent Activity
Several neighbors have expressed concern about the raccoon population in the neighborhood. To help curb raccoon activity, please do not leave any food including pet food outside and be sure to secure garbage. These critters are quite destructive! In addition to the raccoons, there has been an uptick in rat sightings, presumably caused by ongoing construction. Rodent Control has been notified and will service the area once construction is near completion. Again, these rodents are mainly attracted to food sources. Remove the source, and they typically will find a new place to live.
Annual LMA Grant
The LMA designates funds each year for the neighborhood to make recreational improvements. This year, the oaks in all of the park areas were cleared of dead wood. Trimming occurred along roadways. Some of the trees are at risk of damage from trucks along the roadways. The health of the trees and the safety of residents are top of mind. Unfortunately, the tornado took out a few trees and we are still awaiting cleanup from the LMA.
There is a round of community grants available through City Council, sponsored by Cox Communication and Caesar’s Entertainment. If you have any ideas for grant use for the neighborhood, please let us know. So far, we have received ideas for benches in the park areas, tree plantings, speed bumps, more tree maintenance, entrance sign restoration, murals on the lakefront pavilions, and trash can lids for the lakefront. We will be submitting this month.
Community Reporting of Dumped Dogs in Lake Terrace
We would like to share the story of our neighbor, Keith Capone, and his mission to end the abandoned dog epidemic on the lakefront. Keith recently recovered 3 dumped dogs from under the bridge on St. Bernard on 3 separate occasions. One of the dogs was still alive, but had severe injuries and required an operation. Keith generously paid for this surgery out of his own pocket and the dog is doing great. A Go Fund Me has been set up to help Keith recoup some of this expense, see link below.
Several city leaders were contacted to see what improvements could be made to the space to deter this type of crime. Councilman Green's office said they would get back to me by July 4th, but we have not heard back. The Third District NOPD are working with the SPCA to see what can be done. They recommended that if any more dogs are found dumped in the neighborhood, that a report should be filed with them immediately. Third District Community Liaison Officer Christian Recile has informed us that making a report is the first step in monitoring the illegal dumping of animals.
Entergy Servitudes
A significant power outage occurred in the neighborhood on July 3rd due to a fire in a transformer building between New York St. and Allen Tousaint. The Fire Department and Entergy were able to quickly access the location and put out the fire. However, if the easement would have been blocked by a vehicle or other objects, this could have ended differently and potentially even spread to a neighboring home. Please remember that the utility easements in our neighborhood must remain clear of any objects. These spaces are not personal storage units for cars, trailers, boats, or lawn equipment. Entergy needs quick and safe access to these spaces.
Upcoming Social Event
The LTPOA will host a summer send off party, most likely in the beginning of September, so please keep an eye out for details later this summer.
